Online Residencies

“COVID-19. The World After the Pandemic”

During month-long online residencies “COVID-19. The World After the Pandemic” 15 residents will collaborate with the Biennale Warszawa team. Online residencies offer a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experiences concerning artistic and socio-political context of their work and research, as well as contribution to the discussion on alternative economic, social, political, ecologic, educational and cultural models which could be introduced after the COVID-19 pandemic. The residency is not organised to produce any particular work, but some of the initiated activities – ideas elaborated in the course of the programme – can be continued and developed in the further Biennale Warszawa programming.

The residency is the attempt to invite to a conversation and self-diagnosis related to water. To look at it from the anthropological perspective, as Andrea Ballestero says, as a trans-substance which permeates various spaces and categories, at the same time always eluding definitions; to take into account the multi-scale nature of water in its relationship with people.

In the course of his residency, he will embark on a search for group practices — organisation and production, resistance, perseverance, also in the time of the pandemic. The staring point will be his own experience of life and work in various communities which he will juxtapose with testimonies and experiences of other people. A map outlined in this manner, in a possibly available and pocket edition, may indicate to us some sort of beginning (a new community?) or the end (of the world?).

During her residency, she will be collecting information on new housing policies, new uninhabited buildings, and the possibilities of changing the function of building, also in the context of the draft act on housing cooperatives.

In her residency, she will focus on the subject of the other who nowadays often becomes a target of hate and fear. By inviting immigrants living in Poland to collaborate, the artist attempts to imagine the new political reality. Is building new economic and social systems possible without a profound transformation of fundamental values?

Kornelia Dzikowska

During her residency she will look at the mechanism of adjustment and adaptation as a structure of survival — has the notion of the absurd become the new normal, or perhaps it was the old normal that was absurd?

Justyna Orłowska

resident in September 2020

In the course of her residency she will compare the material from the field research which conducted in the Maldives in 2014 as part of the doctoral project executed within the Polish Academy of Sciences, titled “Life on drowning islands. Social aspects of the risk perception in view of the increasing water levels in oceans on the example of the Maldives” with the current situation in the Maldives during the pandemic. The result of her explorations will take the form of a popular science article and/or a seminar expanded with audio-visual materials.

In the course of his residency the artist wants to study the dubious nature of money and its evolving importance in the time of a global crisis, as well as outside/counter/capitalist or alternative ways to estimate and value services, goods and art.

Tytus Szabelski

During his residency, he will take a closer look at the vision of the future outlined by technical patents submitted by Amazon. On their basis, he will try to envision alternative opportunities to apply solutions which by default are to reinforce capitalism in its latest, digital version.

Daniel Kotowski

In his residency, he will raise the issue of access to information and its functioning in the social and political context, as well as in relation to public information.

Romuald Krężel

During his residency, he will be mapping, comparing, and conducting a creative analysis od two crises — the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate crisis. He will attempt to study what the current pandemic crisis can teach us in the context of the climate catastrophe and to what extent it can help us prepare for the disaster. Both globally and locally.

Bartosz Wójcik

During his residency, he will depart from narrative based on Cuba and/or Jamaica as synecdoche for West Indies, focusing on Barbados, an island country universally associated with Rihanna, and not with the thriving visual art community. The objective is to conduct online audio and video correspondence with Sheena Rose, Annalee Davis and Ewan Atkinson, to document it and prepare its results in October in the form of essays analysing the situation of the three artists who have been carrying their interdisciplinary activities for years. The project will also include the writings of Karen Lord, a Barbadian author of speculative fiction.

In the course of their shared residency, Julia Holewińska and Tomasz Szerszeń will study new forms of artistic utopias and collective life where art is combined with economy, architecture and politics. Their point of departure will be leftist and decolonial forms of artistic, philosophical and activist practice and theory originating from Latin America.

Anka Herbut

resident in November 2020

During her residency, she will be working on the BRAVE SPACES [TERENY DZIELNE] project in which, from the perspective of the pandemic experience, she intends to study grass-roots forms of organising bodies in the public space, as well as choreographic aspects of pandemic biopolitics. Referring, among others, to medieval dancing manias (choreomania) and Randy Martin’s theory, she will concentrate on the relationship between movement, social mobilization and agency. She will create an archive documenting new proxemics and forms of supervision during the pandemic.
